Introduction to Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP)

An Electrostatic Precipitator (ESP) is an air pollution control device used to remove fine particulate matter such as dust, smoke, fly ash, and other suspended particles from industrial exhaust gases before they are released into the atmosphere. It operates on the principle of electrostatic attraction, where electrically charged, particles are attracted to and collected on oppositely charged plates.

Working Principle

  1. Contaminated gas enters the precipitator.

  3. Dust particles become electrically charged as they pass through the ionized region.
  4. The charged particles are attracted to collecting plates of opposite charge.
  5. The accumulated dust is periodically removed by mechanical rapping or vibration and collected in hoppers.
  6. Cleaned gas exits the precipitator and is discharged into the atmosphere.
