Introduction to an MSW-Based Biogas Plant

A Municipal Solid Waste (MSW)-Based Biogas Plant is a waste-to-energy facility that converts the biodegradable fraction of municipal solid waste into biogas through the process of anaerobic digestion. Municipal solid waste generated from households, markets, hotels, restaurants, and commercial establishments contains a significant amount of organic matter such as food waste, vegetable residues, fruit peels, and garden waste, which can be utilized for biogas production.

In an MSW-based biogas plant, the collected waste is first segregated to remove non-biodegradable materials such as plastics, metals, glass, and inert substances. The organic portion is then shredded and mixed with water to form a slurry. This slurry is fed into an anaerobic digester where microorganisms decompose the organic matter in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas mainly composed of methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).

The generated biogas can be used for electricity generation, cooking fuel, heating applications, or upgraded to biomethane for use as a vehicle fuel. The residual digestate obtained after digestion can be processed into organic manure, providing an additional environmental benefit.

MSW-based biogas plants offer a sustainable solution for urban waste management by reducing landfill dependency, minimizing greenhouse gas emissions, recovering renewable energy, and promoting circular economy practices. These plants play an important role in achieving cleaner cities and supporting sustainable development goals through efficient waste utilization and renewable energy generation.

5 projects of Compressed Biogas based on various substrates already commissioned and are operational.

Done more than 15 Projects on Poultry litter-based biogas to power at various poultry farms to treat poultry litter and made them odour and flies free.

Our work is appreciated and acknowledged by Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, New Delhi by sanctioning almost more than 75 projects on bio gas-based power generation under Biogas Power (Off Grid) Programme since 2006 for captive use in the range of 3KW to 1500 KW.

We have also installed around 10000 small 2 CUM prefabricated family size plants in more than 20 districts of Maharashtra to replace LPG or fire wood for cooking during last 8 years under MNRE’s NBMMP scheme.

We are on empanelment of GEDA, MEDA, CREDA, MP Urja, TREDL, BTDC Bangalore, Guwahati, Coimbatore and Indore which are state nodal agencies of MNRE and recently we have got selected as technical agency for implementation of “GOBAR DHAN” program by many state governments across India.

  • 110 Ton/day MSW treatment plant for Parbhani Municipal Corporation recently commissioned.
  • 250 Ton/day MSW treatment plant at Akola Municipal Corporation is under construction and will be completed within 6 months.
  • 125 Ton /day mixed waste based 7000 kg CBG production is under commissioning at Karnal
